Lin Family Garden, Taiwan 2018
Lin Family Garden, Taiwan 2018
There is a beautiful mansion and garden you should see in Banqiao, previously the residence of Taiwan’s richest family and now a national historic monument. This Lin Family Garden is Taiwan's most complete surviving example of traditional Chinese garden architecture.
This was painted one autumn when my father unexpectedly found himself in the hospital and I was left to wander Taipei alone for the first time in my life. I took my watercolor set with me and painted scenes from my daily trips, and would come back to the hospital room for dinner, and we’d talk about my paintings and what I’d seen. This series of postcards I painted always reminds me of that oddly cozy show-and-tell at his bedside during a heavy time of uncertainty.
