Inspired by the Dutch Masters’ rhetoric of richly lush and flamboyant blooms, this pastel painting focuses its attention on one full bloom, the others indicated with gestural lines and simple silhouettes, as if hinting at the various life stages of the flower. The detailed botanical study in wintry white is balanced out by the simplicity and darkness found in the rest of the canvas, and these “unfinished” components provide a fresh perspective on the traditional still life.
