plant diaries

Is that a new leaf? When did you get so tall?? Every plant is its own adventure, and in this session I'll be showing you how to keep track of your plants' accomplishments and take notes through illustration + watercolor, practicing careful observation + color mixing. We'll also pay attention to layout and design within our sketchbooks.

You'll leave with the start of a visual journal that will grow alongside your plant friends and will be a wonderful way to explore your relationship with drawing + watercolors as you spend quiet time connecting with nature.

handwriting 2.0

Are you tired of making excuses for your handwriting? Let’s start with what this class is not: it’s not about cursive, calligraphy, or writing neatly. It is about developing a handwriting with style that reflects who you want to be.

We’ll learn terminology and concepts to give your letters a solid foundation, and then have fun playing with different letterforms to give our adult handwriting life! No more third-grade rules! Half technical practice, half artistic exploration, this class will have you thinking about handwriting in a fresh way.

say it with line

There’s emotion in every line. It can be sharp and decisive, wiggly and nervous, airy and elegant, or dark and moody. Communicate your vision through your drawings by putting purpose and intentionality behind your line.

We'll go through practical exercises to apply line with confidence, and explore different methods so that you can mix and match these tools to build your own style!

happy hour watercolor cocktails - in person!

Come join me for happy hour—the first drink’s on us! We'll be playing with different ways to draw + paint our favorite drink recipes, practicing color mixing + water control techniques. Hosted by the 1 Hotel in San Francisco.

charcoal drawing

The oldest drawing material in history, charcoal is one of the most natural and accessible of drawing tools. This simple material, essentially a burnt branch, is amazingly versatile in its uses and results. We’ll learn about materials and tools of the trade; practice mark making, blending, and value scales; and then put everything together in a final drawing, with a different focus each month.

Designed with both beginners and practicing artists in mind.

food diaries

Your memory is better than you think! We're breaking away from careful observation + still lifes, and we'll be drawing from our memory, experiences, and reasoning to tell a story in the form of a fun food diary.

We'll start with a review of 3 simple shapes to establish some structure and confidence, and then, armed with pencils + watercolors, we'll draw our way through food of your choosing together!

watercolor mixing charts

We'll be exploring the range of hues possible with our watercolors by creating a color mixing chart. Using 8 or so colors of your choosing (or more for a project you can continue after the session is over), we'll reveal the spectrum that is possible when seemingly disparate colors work together, and the nuanced results are often surprising and magical.

mixed media impressions

You've got it? Let's use it! In this class, anything goes: from childhood markers to pastels to inks made from rust—whatever makes a mark is up for grabs.

We'll set up a simple still life, shake off all the rules, and work intuitively with our mixed media to see the surprising ways they produce rich + unconventional combinations.

What happens if we drag pencil through wet acrylic? Or a pink highlighter over colored pencil? Let's find out!
